With 1.6 million people identifying as vegans in the U.S, it’s no surprise that celebrities have made the change as well.
From health benefits to saving the animals, there are tons of reasons why both celebs and “normal” people like you and I are taking control of their diets and changing the world, one meal at a time.
In this post, we explore 10 vegan celebrities that will not only shock, you but inspire you as well. Grab some avo toast and get comfortable because we are getting started.
Surprising Vegan Celebrities that Will Inspire You
Some of the celebrities are real vegan game changers when it comes to the good they do for the world we live in and inspiring others to make the switch. Let’s find out what famous vegans are using their influence for good, not evil.
1. Miley Cyrus
It may be no shock to you that Miley Cyrus is an animal-loving wild child but did you know she’s been vegan for over four years, now?! She spent the first year hiding her new diet before she announced it on Instagram that she was ready to be held accountable and looked upon as an example for others.
Miley stated, “It’s not about weight, it’s about health.” Cyrus, who has famously posed naked with a pig--both covered in mud--is not shy when it comes to her love for animals. This past Met Gala she paired up the sustainable vegan fashion designer, Stella McCartney, to make a statement for vegan fashion.
“I want to bring a message which is veganism and that there doesn't have to be torture in fabulous fashion.”
Thanks, Miley for showing us that vegan looks good whether your naked and covered in mud or in a ballgown.
2. Liam Hemsworth
PETA’s sexiest vegan of 2016 is none other than Liam Hemsworth who started his journey in May of 2015 in hopes of feeling healthier. The movie star claims...
“After all the information I gather about the mistreatment of animals, I couldn’t continue to eat meat.”
This hunky “Hunger Games” star has cited Woody Harrelson, his mentor both on and off set, as the inspiration behind his vegan diet. Sure it helps that his partner, Miley Cyrus, is also a vegan.
3. Stevie Wonder
Stevie Wonder, one of the most talented artists, came out as vegan a few years ago and we couldn’t be happier. Although he can’t see the terrible mistreatment of animals, he still understands the cruelty behind it.
“I love not eating meat...I do miss chicken, but I’m finding new options every day.”
P.S., if you haven’t already, you’ll want to watch him sing his ‘Go Vegan Song’ during Carpool Karaoke with James Corden. Thank us later.
4. Venus and Serena Williams
Venus and Serena Williams, Grand Slam tennis badasses, put to bed the ‘all vegans are skinny and malnourished’ stereotype. During tennis seasons, these sisters own the court thanks to their mainly raw, vegan diet that is chock full of protein.
“I think it’s a great lifestyle for long-term stability. You also have to look at everything else in your regimen, what you’re putting into your body, like supplements. I’m always learning” -Venus
Venus suffers from Sjögren’s syndrome, an incurable autoimmune disease that results in extreme fatigue which makes being a world champion athlete difficult.
After the initial diagnosis, her doctors recommended she try a raw vegan diet and Serena followed suit. Venus claims to have seen huge improvements and says she owes it all to her change in diet.
5. Will.I.Am
Earlier this year, the Black Eyed Peas musician, Will.I.Am switched to a vegan lifestyle. He released an epic speech within 24 hours of making the switch. Listen to it here. #VGANG
The 43-year-old artist no longer wants to be controlled and “pimped out” by food companies. He made the change to get in control of his health and improve his high blood pressure and cholesterol.
“I don’t want to be diabetic and in and out of the hospital.”
Safe to say that going vegan has given him #thatPOWER.
6. Ariana Grande
The hit pop artist, Ariana Grande, is making a huge splash in the vegan scene for speaking up for animal rights, claiming she loves most animals more than she loves most people. We feel you, Ariana.
“I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-around happier person.”
Although she agrees the vegan diet is great for your health, her main reason for switching to a strict vegan diet, almost five years ago, was for animal ethics.
7. Jared Leto
The vegan rockstar turned actor, Jared Leto, proves you can do anything and look good doing it. Jared Leto turned vegan in his late teens after learning about the pus in dairy products.
When people comment on his youthfulness over the years, he always credits the way he takes care of himself.
“I’m pretty healthy, so I think that helps a lot. I’ve been that way for a long time – 20 solid years of eating vegetarian/vegan and taking care of myself. That probably helps the preservation process.”
He claims to live a straight edge life nowadays, avoiding narcotics and alcohol these days and we think that’s pretty impressive turnaround for a Hollywood star.
8. Evanna Lynch
Evanna Lynch, or maybe you know her as Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series is an incredible vegan advocate. She produces an incredible podcast called The Chickpeeps which delve into vegan dilemmas that all of us face as well as empower your vegan journey.
“Veganism is not ‘you have to live by certain rules,’ it’s not about being perfect- it’s about minimizing suffering.”
We love that she’s not only helping to spread the word but helping others make the switch to a healthier lifestyle too.
9. Michelle Pfeiffer
Hard to believe this blond bombshell is 60 years old. Her secret? Veganism.
“Eating a vegan diet—it’s just so much healthier—and you avoid a lot of toxins that could age your skin and your body.”
She claims that veganism is her fountain of youth and what keeps her skin glowing. We’re not saying that vegan stops the aging process, but if we did, Jared Leto and Michelle Pfeiffer would be our proof.
10. Brad Pitt
Did you really think we were going to end this list without mentioning the heartthrob that is Brad Pitt? Often thought of as the original celeb vegan, he’s also a huge animal rights activist. Just another reason to love him.
“Cramming hens into cages constitutes cruelty to animals, and animals deserve better than that.”
Brad Pitt has been vegan for years before most people even knew even though he’s never been shy about hiding his hatred of red meat. He often speaks out about how he hates to see his partners and children consuming animal products.
